How to consume APIs so that they taste best

Late friday night, your friend shows you a nice API around the corner. They look to have some tasty 200s and they wrap it in nice documentation. You make a request, consume the response but learn only in the middle that it actually has 404 and you're allergic. Was there anything that could've done to prevent this?
